WASHINGTON ( CNN) - - Twenty- nine days after raising the national threat level to Orange, or high, the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday reduced the level one notch to Yellow, or elevated. New York City is to remain on Orange alert, and airspace restrictions for Washington and New York introduced during the war against Iraq will remain in place but under review. The threat level was raised from elevated to high at 8 p. m. on March 17, when U.

President George W.

Bush gave Saddam Hussein 48 hours to step down as the leader of Iraq.

At that time, the White House said intelligence from many sources indicated the al Qaeda terror group might attempt to launch attacks against U.

S. interests, claiming it was defending Muslims or Iraqis.

In a written statement, U. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge said the decision to lower the risk level followed a review of intelligence and an assessment of the threats by the intelligence community. " While we continue to be at risk to the threat of terrorism at an elevated level, extensive protective measures remain in place throughout our nation, " he said. A Bush administration official, explaining the decision to drop the threat level to Yellow, said there has been an decrease in the volume of intelligence chatter, and the intelligence that was continuing to come in was from a narrower range of sources, and from sources not considered highly credible. The official said that under threat level Orange, " We believe there were some people in some locations where they should not have been" and investigations continue.

He would not provide specifics.

New York, which has been at Orange since the September 11 attacks, is to continue its Operation Atlas counter terrorism initiative, the police department said Wednesday. " We are maintaining the current status because New York remains under a greater risk of terrorism than other parts of the country, " said Michael O' Looney, police deputy commissioner. " Although there is no specific threat of terrorism against New York, Operation Atlas remains in effect. " Although the air restrictions remain in place over New York and Washington, other security measures introduced during Operation Liberty Shield are being scaled back. State and local government officials and the business community have been advised that continuous police presence around critical infrastructure is no longer necessary, but that random patrols should continue. At a panel forum Monday, Ridge said he believes that raising the threat level - - and America' s awareness of possible terrorist incidents - - might be serving as a deterrent. " I' m not sure we' re ever going to be able to say that because we raised it from Yellow to Orange or because we modified, changed or enhanced security at this facility, at this bridge, at this tunnel, that it deterred a terrorist from acting, " Ridge said. " But we feel very strongly that it is a very, very important part of how we prosecute domestically the war on terrorism. " Ridge said that America is safer under a Yellow level today than it was under the identical level one year ago because more security practices have become a matter of routine.

It was the third time in the one- year history of the color- coded threat warning system that Ridge had heightened the alert. He first raised it around the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and raised it again in February, citing the increased likelihood that al Qaeda would attempt to attack Americans during or after the Hajj, the Muslim religious period. All three periods of heightened alert passed without incident.

( CNN Student News) - - January 4, 2010 & # 8226; & # 8226; Transcript THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: Hi! Happy new year!

We hope you had a wonderful break. My name is Carl Azuz, and CNN Student News is kicking off 2010 right here, right now. AZUZ: First up, the U.

S. government closes its embassy in the Middle Eastern country of Yemen, and that is because of security concerns. One official says that a group called al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula might be planning an attack against the facility. That same group said it was behind an attempted plot to set off an explosive onboard a plane heading to Detroit, Michigan.

That took place on Christmas day. The suspect allegedly brought the explosives on the plane in his underwear. The plan failed when the device he tried to use didn' t detonate correctly. Some people have asked how the suspect made it past security.

One U.

S. official says it' s because of human error. President Obama has promised that everyone involved in the attack will be held accountable for it. But some critics argue that the president' s response to the situation hasn' t been fast enough, hasn' t been aggressive enough. The president also announced that the suspect was trained by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. That' s the same terrorist group we mentioned before.

The U. S. military has been working with the government of Yemen for a while to fight al Qaeda terrorists. Barbara Starr looks at how that fight has played out in the past. BARBARA STARR, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Yemeni forces earlier this month on a raid against al Qaeda just north of the capital of Sana' a.

The military shouts, & quot; Come out.

It is better for you. Do not be afraid. & quot; Shots are fired and several suspects are finally captured. This was one of Yemen' s efforts to hit back at al Qaeda.

S. assistance with several recent strikes that may have killed some of these men is now openly acknowledged. ABU BAKR AL- QIRBI, YEMENI FOREIGN MINISTER: They are Yemeni armed forces attacks. They were, of course, supported by American intelligence and by the training of the Yemeni armed forces. STARR: What' s next?

The U.

S. military and the intelligence community are looking at everything they have got on al Qaeda in Yemen. Strikes are expected to continue and could involve U.

S. missiles or aircraft, sources say. The U. S. and Yemen are looking for targets linked to the attack of Northwest flight 253. But direct retaliation hasn' t always worked. FORMER U.

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON: Our target was terror. Our mission was clear. There will be no sanctuary for terrorists.

STARR: In 1998, after al Qaeda attacked U. S. embassies in east Africa, President Clinton ordered cruise missile attacks against targets in Afghanistan. But al Qaeda was untouched; key operatives had long fled the area. S. retaliation that worked: it happened in Yemen back in 2002.

A U. S. drone fired a missile. One of the dead was an al Qaeda operative believed to have been behind the October 2000 attack on the Navy warship Cole in Yemen that killed 17 sailors.

Even now, the U. S. is continuing to provide training, weapons and intelligence to the Yemeni forces. But if President Obama decides to strike back in retaliation for the botched attack on the Northwest Airlines flight, there will be a target list for him to approve.

Barbara Starr, CNN, the Pentagon. Is this Legit? RICK VINCENT, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Is this legit?

About a third of the world' s population is Christian. Legit! According to the U. S. government, approximately 33 percent of the global population is Christian, making Christianity the world' s largest religion.

AZUZ: And of course, Christians around the world celebrated Christmas on December 25th, marking the birth of Jesus. One of those celebrations, which you see right here, was held in the city of Bethlehem, the site where Jesus was born.

Worshippers gathered at the Church of the Nativity for a ceremony there. And at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI led the traditional Christmas Eve Mass. There was a disruption at the beginning, though, when a woman ran toward the pope and knocked him down. The religious leader wasn' t hurt. He was helped up and continued with the ceremony, while Vatican guards removed the woman.

Iran Protests AZUZ: A holy day in Iran marked by violence as protesters clashed with police forces about a week ago. Demonstrators have spoken out against the country' s government for months now, but the clashes on the Muslim holy day of Ashura were the worst so far. At least seven people killed in the violence, though protesters and security forces disagree on how those deaths happened. Meantime, Iran' s government says it' s getting ready to hold a & quot; large- scale military exercise& quot; next month.

The country says the goal is to prepare its forces to fight against an attack by the nation' s enemies. There' s been a lot of tension based around Iran' s nuclear program. The country says the program is for peaceful purposes.

Other countries, including the U. S. , believe Iran might be trying to build nuclear weapons.

Health Care Debate AZUZ: Members of the U. Senate and House of Representatives will be meeting this month to put together a final health care reform bill. The Senate passed its version on Christmas Eve. The House had already passed its bill.

But there are some pretty big differences between the two.

One of them: cost. The Senate bill checks in at $ 871 billion. The House version: Over $ 1 trillion.

Another issue: the so- called public option, a government- run health insurance program. House bill includes it; Senate bill doesn' t. So, some compromises need to be made to come up with a final bill. And since that then has to be approved by both Houses of Congress, there are some concerns about whether it will pass. Money Word TOMEKA JONES, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Here' s the deal: Today' s Money Word is depression.

It describes an extreme decline in economic activity, and it is much worse than a recession. Put that in your word bank! AZUZ: The U. S. avoided slipping into a depression during the recent financial crisis, but it did end up in a recession.

You know it; you heard about it all last semester.

Now, when that economic decline started in December 2007, the number of Americans who were out of a job was around 5 percent. By last November, that number had doubled. Kitty Pilgrim examines what might lie ahead in 2010. KITTY PILGRIM, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Happy New Year. More than 15 million people in the country are unemployed; many of them lost their jobs in 2009.

What' s ahead for 2010? Elena Escalona, who spoke to us late last year about her career hopes after sending out dozens of resumes and searching for a job, she suddenly realized what she wanted to do in life. ELENA ESCALONA, SEARCHING FOR A JOB: Luckily, out of all of this and something really positive that has come out of it is that I' ve discovered that I want to become a teacher. And I think I would have never discovered that out of, you know, this entire year of looking for a job.

That instead of having a job physically handed to me, I' ve really had to fight for it and kind of, you know, discovered where I belong in the world. PILGRIM: As the unemployed site- surf and soul search, there is some glimmer of hope. The last report in December found that new claims for unemployment benefits fell sharply, down by 22, 000.

That was the lowest level since July 2008. And the four- week average of people who filed for benefits has been declining for 17 weeks straight. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: We are in a very different place today than we were one year ago. We may forget, but we' re in a very different place.

We can safely say that we are no longer facing the potential collapse of our financial system and we' ve avoided the depression many feared. Our economy is growing for the first time in a year.

PILGRIM: Next week will also provide a good snapshot of how manufacturing and service sectors held up in December.

As the economy gradually recovers from the worst recession since the Great Depression, going from cutting jobs to creating them is a slow adjustment. Businesses are likely to be cautious, fully convinced in recovery before adding any new hires. DR. MARTIN REGALIA, U.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHIEF ECONOMIST: We' re out of the recession everywhere, but we' re not growing enough on Main Street to put people back to work. When the average person thinks of a recession, they don' t think of it like economists do, you know, zero GDP growth or whatever.

They think of it as, you know, & quot; Am I losing my job? Am I getting a raise? & quot; PILGRIM: Kitty Pilgrim, CNN.

Promo AZUZ: Well, if you' re still looking for a New Year' s resolution, why not make us your home page? CNNStudent.

News. com is awesome! We' ve got a ton of free resources for you there: all of our shows from this school year, plus transcripts of every program we' ve done this school year. We' ve got Daily Discussion questions, links to our blog and downloadable maps. It' s all right there.

Log on, make us your home page today! Before We Go AZUZ: And before we go, we are bringing you some unique New Year' s celebrations. Raleigh, North Carolina, where an enormous acorn is the countdown clock. You might think that' s nuts, but the tradition' s lasted nearly 20 years.

Mobile, Alabama is over the moon about its Moon. Pie celebration. The tasty tradition: to ring in the New Year by watching the moon rise.

And a traditional ball drop in Roanoke, Virginia. Okay, maybe letting students drop 11, 000 rubber balls isn' t exactly a traditional New Year' s. Goodbye AZUZ: But it sure starts 2010 with a little bounce in their step.

Ah, New Year' s puns. They all deserve one chorus of Auld Lang Sigh. CNN Student News is back tomorrow; we hope you will be too! See you then.

Miami ( CNN) - - Waves gently lap at the shore.

Palm trees rustle in the breeze. A boat drifts by. For those who like to work out, there' s no better place. This is one of Miami' s new outdoor gyms. Miami - - known for its lively nightlife, tanned skin and tiny clothing - - was slapped with a big, pudgy curve ball in 2009, when Men' s Fitness magazine named it the fattest city in America. & quot; I thought we' d be prettiest city in America, & quot; said Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff. & quot; And interestingly enough, we didn' t come in second or third, we came in the fattest city in America.

And I just wanted to change that image. & quot; Sarnoff is an active middle- aged man - - his crutches from a recent ski injury serving as evidence - - and he took the distinction personally. & quot; It' s who I am. I want to make sure that I work out personally for as long as I can, I think there' s a segment of Miami who wants to do the same thing and I want to provide the opportunity to do it no charge in a beautiful environment. & quot; Sarnoff used quality- of- life funds, given to all Miami city commissioners, to buy outdoor workout equipment. Some commissioners use the money for things like traffic circles. But in three public parks in Sarnoff' s district, at a cost of about $ 55, 000 per park - - there are platforms with machines that work the back, shoulders, arms, chest, legs and abs. & quot; Before I became commissioner, the only thing I remember getting from government are garbage cans, & quot; Sarnoff said. & quot; And that' s a harsh, horrible thing to say and yet it' s what I remember. I wanted to be able to give people back something that is very personal to them and to me exercise equipment and a brand new running surface is very personal to people.

And if you use it an hour a couple days a week, it puts a smile on your face for that period of time. & quot; If 9: 00 to 10: 00 on a Monday morning in Kennedy Park was any indication, the idea is putting a smile on dozens of park visitors a day. The equipment was used steadily, by people of all ages. & quot; It' s really nderful to come and take a walk in a beautiful park and work out a little bit, & quot; said Milley Cassanova, who together with her retired friend tried the gear for the first time. Roofer Alvar Contreras comes to the park in between construction jobs. & quot; I can' t join a gym because I don' t know when I am free or when I am busy, & quot; said Contreras. So the free gym is a perfect fit. In Miami, the outdoor gyms so far are confined to Sarnoff' s District 2 borders, though he' s working to change that.

But Miami Beach - - home to the land of tiny bikinis and glistening skin that is South Beach - - has its own set of outdoor gyms. Rhonda Gracie, landscape projects coordinator for Miami Beach Parks and Recreation, had the challenge of finding equipment that could survive the salty ocean air and sandy beach. & quot; On the beach, directly off of the water, we probably will get five to seven years we expect for the life cycle - - which is really a great value. We get about the same with our playgrounds, & quot; said Gracie. & quot; And as a result for the amount of money we' re spending, the amount of use that we' re getting, it' s really pennies per day. & quot; Gracie has spent about $ 80, 000 on three gyms on Miami Beach. And while it' s hard to track results from the money spent - - after all, how do you prove overall health is better because people are using the gyms? - - to the regulars, like 89- year- old Sal Cappi, it' s money well spent. Cappi is a member of the South Beach Community Fitness Organization, a group formed after the outdoor gyms were installed. & quot; I love it because all these young guys, you know we get together, I ask them what they eat, they ask me what I eat, we get all different ways of diets and stuff which is very important, and exercise is good for your body and mind.

That' s why I do it. & quot; Standing in the sun, listening to the seagulls, and looking out at the blue water ( not a bad place to cool off after a work out) , you can see why these gyms are so popular.

( CNN) - - Australian rookie Daniel Ricciardo is set to make his Formula One debut at the British Grand Prix after signing a deal with Spanish team Hispania. Ricciardo, who turns 22 on Friday, has been a test driver for the Red Bull and Toro Roso teams but will now take his place on the grid at Silverstone on July 10. He replaces Narain Karthikeyan, though the Indian driver is likely to return for the inaugural race in his home country, in Delhi on October 30. & quot; Hispania Racing and Red Bull Racing signed a collaboration deal today which allows young Australian talent Daniel Ricciardo to join the Spanish team as its official driver, & quot; an official statement on Hispania' s web site read. Ricciardo will team up with Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi to complete Hispania' s line- up, and try to help the Spaniards record their first points of the season. & quot; It' s a dream come true for me - - for the first time on an F1 starting grid, & quot; he told the team web site. & quot; I had to pinch myself a couple of times to be sure that it' s real. I' m excited and can hardly wait to drive at Silverstone.

It' s a new challenge, a new experience, a new team, but I' m ready and will give of my best in any event. & quot; Jose Ramon Carabante, Hispania' s team boss, said he hoped the deal would mark the start of a strong partnership with Red Bull. & quot; This agreement is a reward for all the hard work Hispania Racing has shown since we started in Formula One last year, & quot; he said. & quot; We' re proud that the Formula One world champion team has trusted us in their effort of developing their drivers. Let' s hope that this is just the start of a fruitful relationship. & quot; Meanwhile, Formula One' s governing body, the International Automobile Federation ( FIA) , has agreed to delay the use of new ' greener' engines in the sport until the start of the 2014 season. The teams will switch from V8 engines on their cars to a V6 1.

( CNN) - - The Texas Rangers will raise the height of the rails at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, the team said Tuesday, after a 39- year- old fan fell to his death while trying to catch a ball. & quot; Even though all current rail heights in Rangers Ballpark in Arlington currently exceed code, the Rangers intend to raise the height of all rails in front of seating areas to the highest standard in the United States at this time, & quot; the team said in a statement. As the rails are being refitted, the Rangers said they would take & quot; interim& quot; steps, such as posting new signs that will remind fans not to lean, sit on or stand against the rails. The team will also issue a warning prior to the start of each game via its public address system, the Rangers said. The news comes in the wake of the death of Shannon Stone, a veteran firefighter and Rangers fan whose death prompted a national outpouring of condolences.

In the second inning of the ill- fated game on July 7, star outfielder Josh Hamilton tossed a souvenir ball into the stands after a batter hit a foul ball. Stone stuck out his glove and reached for the ball, but lost his balance and flipped over the railing of the outfield seats. He fell about 20 feet and crashed head- first into an area near a scoreboard, suffering fatal injuries. Stone is survived by his wife, Jenny, and his young son, Cooper, who witnessed the tragic accident.

Another man fell at the stadium last year but survived. On July 6, 2010, a fan fell while trying to catch a foul ball. The man, Tyler Morris, survived the 30- foot drop but fractured his skull and injured his foot and ankle. & quot; The safety of our fans is our top priority, & quot; Rangers CEO and President Nolan Ryan said in the statement. & quot; The initiatives we are announcing today for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington will help to ensure that we meet that priority. & quot;

( ) - - On Wednesday, Apple released a software update for i. Phones, i. Pads and i.

Pod Touch devices, fixing a flawed location- storage method that raised privacy concerns last month.

The update, i. OS version 4. 3, reduces the size of the file that stores geodata on i.

OS devices - - meaning it will no longer contain a history of location data going back as far as one year ago. Additionally, with the update installed, i. Tunes won' t back up the i.

OS device' s location database file, meaning the geodata will no longer be stored on your computer.

Last, when customers disable the Location Services setting on their i.

Phone, i. Pad or i.

Pod Touch, it deletes all the information stored in the location file, according to Apple.

The software update comes in response to a , who discovered that an unprotected file inside Apple' s i. OS software stores a log of geodata accompanied with time stamps, creating a digital trail of a customer' s general moves for the past year.

The Wall Street Journal later reported that even when location services were turned off on the i. Phone, . that i. OS devices are not actually tracking a customer' s precise movements, but rather, i.

OS devices are collecting information about nearby cell towers and Wi- Fi access points, which helps speed up location services. The company added that & quot; bugs& quot; caused i. OS devices to continue storing location data even when location services were turned off.

Apple also said it made a mistake by making the location database file too large. The i. OS 4. 3 update is a free download available through i.

Your child' s doctor selects a treatment plan based on several factors that affect your child' s prognosis. Factors include your child' s age, the stage of the cancer, the type of cells involved in the cancer, and whether there are any abnormalities in the chromosomes and genes. Using this information, your child' s doctor categorizes the cancer as low risk, intermediate risk or high risk. What treatment or combination of treatments your child receives for neuroblastoma depends on the risk category.

Surgery Surgeons use scalpels and other surgical tools to remove cancer cells. In children with low- risk neuroblastoma, surgery to remove the tumor may be the only treatment needed.

Whether the tumor can be completely removed depends on its location and its size. Tumors that are attached to nearby vital organs & mdash; such as the lungs or the spinal cord & mdash; may be too risky to remove. In intermediate- risk and high- risk neuroblastoma, surgeons may try to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, may then be used to kill remaining cancer cells.

Chemotherapy Chemotherapy uses chemicals to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy targets rapidly growing cells in the body, including cancer cells.

Unfortunately, chemotherapy also damages healthy cells that grow quickly, such as cells in the hair follicles and in the gastrointestinal system, which can cause side effects. Children with low- risk neuroblastoma that can' t be removed surgically may undergo chemotherapy. Sometimes chemotherapy is administered before surgery ( neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to shrink the tumor to a size that' s more easily removed. In other cases, chemotherapy may be the only treatment. Children with intermediate- risk neuroblastoma often receive a combination of chemotherapy drugs before surgery to improve the chances that the entire tumor can be removed.

Children with high- risk neuroblastoma usually receive high doses of chemotherapy drugs to shrink the tumor and to kill any cancer cells that have spread elsewhere in the body. Chemotherapy is usually used before surgery and before bone marrow stem cell transplant. Radiation therapy Radiation therapy uses high doses of energy particles to destroy cancer cells.

Radiation therapy primarily affects the area where it' s aimed. Your child' s radiation therapy team tries to protect the healthy cells near the cancer, but some healthy cells may be damaged by the radiation.

What side effects your child experiences depends on where the radiation is directed and how much radiation is administered. Children with low- risk or intermediate- risk neuroblastoma may receive radiation therapy if surgery and chemotherapy haven' t been helpful. Children with high- risk neuroblastoma may receive radiation therapy after chemotherapy and surgery, to prevent cancer from recurring.

Stem cell transplant Children with high- risk neuroblastoma may receive a transplant using their own blood stem cells ( autologous stem cell transplant) . The bone marrow produces stem cells, which mature and develop into the red and white cells and platelets that make up the blood.

Your child undergoes a procedure that filters and collects stem cells from his or her blood. Then high doses of chemotherapy are used to kill any remaining cancer cells in your child' s body. Your child' s stem cells are then injected into your child' s body, where they can form new, healthy blood cells. Long- term and late side effects of cancer treatment As more and more children are surviving cancer and living into adulthood, doctors are increasingly aware of the long- term side effects of cancer treatment. Doctors recommend childhood cancer survivors be seen regularly by a doctor who understands the long- term and late side effects that can affect children after cancer treatment.

Side effects vary depending on treatment, but may include impaired growth, thyroid problems, second cancers and infertility, which may be caused by chemotherapy drugs. Difficulty thinking and trouble processing thoughts may be long- term side effects of radiation, especially brain radiation or total body irradiation. & copy; 1998- 2011 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research ( MFMER) .

Atlanta, Georgia ( CNN) - - Much of the world got to know her as Col.

Wilma Deering on the & quot; Buck Rogers in the 25th Century& quot; television series. Though she later played Kate on & quot; Silver Spoons, & quot; there was something about that Spandex that was hard to forget. But today, actress Erin Gray has found a way to combine her celebrity with the very real business of fan- based conventions. At events like in Atlanta, the woman known for playing strong female characters now uses her brains to wrangle issues for her celebrity clients as they prepare for close encounters with fans.

Gray runs a company called , which represents about 35 celebrity clients at conventions around the world. CNN caught up with her at Dragon* Con in Atlanta ( unofficially referred to as & quot; Party. Con& quot; ) . Dragon* Con is known for being the most & quot; fan- friendly& quot; convention, which, in itself, can pose both unique opportunities and unique challenges. Heading into the weekend, there were 35, 000 people expected to attend, primarily to see some of the 400 celebrity guests who sign autographs and mingle with the crowds.

Gray knew this meant that there were a lot of things to plan for. & quot; We create 30- page spreadsheets so that we can keep track of where we are in the process, & quot; Gray said. & quot; Are the contracts signed? Have the photos and bios been sent? Are the travel details done? & quot; Today, the former space colonel walks a fine line between getting her clients closer to their fans at conventions and keeping them away. & quot; We' ve had death threats before, & quot; she said. & quot; I' ve had my own personal stalker. I would get nude drawings of my body with a knife and a message saying ' I' m watching you' and ' I' m going to get you. ' When you have a baby, you just feel so vulnerable.

We couldn' t figure it out because it was happening at the studio, & quot; Gray said. Incidentally, it turned out to be a security guard. & quot; The other one, I would get these 10- page tiny handwritten letters front and back and perfect penmanship, and he would say things like ' don' t tell your husband about our relationship. ' And you know how I found out who it was? He said, ' when you waved at me. ' I waved to my postman. This is before we had stalking laws.

And when something like that happens, you think, ' is being an actress worth it? ' & quot; Luckily, Gray doesn' t have those terrifying experiences anymore, but now she has clients who do. & quot; I have a couple of clients who give me the names of their stalkers, and I have to let the promoter know who they are and to keep an eye out for them. I have one who is obsessed with a female celebrity, and this guy e- mails me, texts me, and he' ll come to a show and stand about 20 feet away and stare at her. We' ll hire security, and they will be with security all day long, & quot; Gray said. & quot; Every actor has their stalker. & quot; But the reality is that conventions like Dragon* Con can help make or break an actor' s career.

We are no longer living in the age of Hollywood executives determining who the stars will be, Gray said. We are living in an age of social media, where the fans have a louder voice than ever before.

For example, Gray has one client whom Hollywood paid no attention to.

So she went out on her own and started a webcast, and today has more than 1. 7 million followers on Twitter.

Ouch! That' s gotta hurt all of those people who told Felicia Day, & quot; don' t call us; we' ll call you. & quot; & quot; I think there' s been a major shift in grass roots media because of the internet and because the geeks and nerds rule the world. They are in control in so many ways. The comic is today' s Western, so many movies, and I think that if actors want to optimize their longevity, it' s important for them to meet the fans because those fans are so loyal and will show up at any movie or tune in to any television show they' re on, & quot; Gray said.

The shift in Gray' s own career from onscreen heartthrob to celebrity manager was completely unscripted. & quot; As an actress reaching her mid- to late 40s and the number of roles not being there and still having kids in private schools, there came a point when I hit bottom, and I was desperate to get a job and understand that being a model and actress my entire life since the age of 15, I didn' t have the qualifications to get a normal job, nor did I want to. I couldn' t see myself in a corporate environment under the thumb of some boss, & quot; she said. So she started talking to other female actresses in her position, and before long, they were telling her how she could make money at conventions like these. & quot; I went online and started booking myself, and one day Gil Gerard called me up and said, ' what are you doing? ' and I told him I was going to a show in Ohio, and he said, & quot; Oh, I want to go, book me, and I' ll pay you 10 percent. & quot; Then Gil went and played golf with Marc Singer, and there you have it, a business was born. & quot; Incidentally, both Gerard and Singer made appearances at Dragon* Con this year, along with a host of Gray' s other clients. & quot; Dragon* Con is the number one, in my opinion, fan- based show in the world. The entire focus is on the fans for the fans to have a good time, to satisfy their desires and needs and so on. & quot; Thus the art of managing a celebrity. Gray says she goes to about one con a month, sometimes more.

If you' re concerned about your daughter' s development, make an appointment to talk about it with your family doctor or pediatrician. Because appointments can be brief, and there' s often a lot of ground to cover, it' s a good idea to arrive well prepared. Here' s some information to help you get ready for your appointment, and what you might expect from your doctor. What you can do Write down any symptoms you' ve noticed in your daughter, including any that may seem unrelated to the reason for which you scheduled the appointment. Write down key personal information, including any significant illnesses you may have experienced during pregnancy or any medications that you may have used during pregnancy.

Also, try to recall when your daughter met developmental milestones, such as learning to say her first word or learning to walk.

Write down questions to ask your child' s doctor. Your time with your daughter' s doctor may be limited, so preparing a list of questions can help you make the most of your time together. For triple X syndrome, some basic questions you might want to ask include: What' s the most likely cause of my daughter' s symptoms? What kinds of tests does she need? Do these tests require any special preparation?

How might this condition affect her? What treatments are available, and which do you recommend?

My daughter has other health conditions. How can we best manage these conditions together? What services are available to help my daughter with developmental delays or learning disabilities?

Are there any brochures or other printed material that I can take with me? What websites do you recommend visiting?

In addition to the questions that you' ve prepared to ask your doctor, don' t hesitate to ask additional questions you may think of during your appointment. What to expect from your doctor Your doctor is likely to ask you a number of questions.

Being ready to answer them may reserve time to go over points you want to spend more time on. Your doctor may ask: When did you first notice your daughter' s symptoms? Does anything seem to improve your daughter' s symptoms? What, if anything, appears to worsen the symptoms?

Did your daughter achieve developmental milestones on time, such as learning to talk or walk? & copy; 1998- 2011 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research ( MFMER) .
